Discord says it is cooperating with the investigation into the breach of classified material

Instant messaging platform Discord said Wednesday it is cooperating with U.S. law enforcement authorities as they investigate the leak of classified U.S. documents that has drawn attention around the world.

The statement comes as questions continue to swirl about who leaked the documents, whether they are authentic and whether the intelligence assessments they contain are reliable. The documents, which carry markings suggesting they are highly classified, have led to a series of stories about the war in Ukraine, protests in Israel and how the United States surveils both friend and foe.

The source of the documents is not publicly known, but open-source investigative site Bellingcat traces their early appearance to Discord, a popular messaging platform for gamers.

According to Discord’s statement, it was already in contact with researchers.

– Regarding the apparent breach of confidential material, we are cooperating with law enforcement authorities, the statement stated. “As this remains an active investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Although the documents only recently began to attract attention, Bellingcat said he found evidence that at least some of the files had been floating around social media as far back as March or even January.

Bellingcat cited Discord users it said had given similar accounts of the documents’ origins, but cautioned that it could not independently verify all the information they shared.

Reuters could not immediately confirm Bellingcat’s report; Attempts to reach former members of the server through social media Reddit and other Discord servers were not immediately successful.
